How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

Our obsession with bright, shining smiles is growing, and teeth whitening is becoming more popular than ever. Bright, white teeth help us look and feel our best. That is why more and more people are going to the dentist for teeth whitening treatments, and walking away with a whiter smile. If you’re thinking about having your teeth whitened, this article will help you understand the procedure of professional teeth whitening.

The main purpose of a professional teeth whitening treatment is of course to lighten or brighten teeth; this is particularly useful for patients who suffer teeth discoloration. There are two commonly offered professional teeth whitening services: bleaching and laser whitening.  Professional bleaching ─ also commonly called chairside bleaching ─ is done by applying strong active agents such as hydrogen peroxide to the teeth to remove organic stains. Similarly, laser whitening also applies strong active agents to bleach the teeth, while subjecting the teeth to strong light to speed the bleaching process.  Both are pain-free and low-risk procedures that give almost immediate results, and is therefore, suitable for a wide range of patients. Nonetheless, patients with intrinsic discoloration, worn enamel, or tooth injury might not be eligible to undergo the procedures.

Your dentist will do a dental exam to check for potential problems and take photos for the whitening procedure. Before any professional teeth whitening procedures, your teeth will need to be cleared of plaque and debris. If you are eligible for the professional teeth whitening procedure, then a liquid protectant is applied on top of your gums to protect them from the bleach and avoid irritation. Bleaching gel with active ingredients is then applied to the aesthetic zone of the teeth for 15 to 30 minutes. Every 30 minutes, the gel is washed off and new gel is reapplied; this process is repeated until the professional teeth whitening procedure is completed. In a laser whitening process, intense light is applied to fasten the chemical reactions of the active ingredients.

The results of professional teeth whitening procedures are usually visible almost immediately. Throughout the entire procedure, you will have full supervision from your dentist. Your dentist will determine the most suitable treatment for you by taking your dental health history, teeth sensitivity, and tooth discoloration case. Potential side effects include irritation, sensitive teeth, and sore throat during or after the treatment. After the treatment, you need to maintain your dental hygiene normally by brushing, flossing, and rinsing your teeth. Professional teeth whitening procedures are not permanent solutions, and they could last as short as a month to three years depending on how well you maintenan your treatment. Certain food and beverages like coffee or red wine, or smoking can shorten your period with bright, white teeth after your treatment.
